The SLATE study (Stereotactic Laser Ablation for Temporal Lobe Epilepsy) is investigating whether MRI-guided laser ablation may help people with drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.
Participants with Epilepsy from our area are needed.
SLATE is a minimally invasive procedure that targets and destroys areas of abnormal brain tissue. During the procedure, the patient is in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner that allows the surgeon to see where to insert a tiny laser fiber through a small hole and into the brain. The laser heats and destroys the abnormal tissue, while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue. The FDA has cleared the use of this device for neurosurgery and other surgical specialties, but we are investigating how this may support those with uncontrolled seizures caused by mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.
